The rift within Nigeria’s Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) deepened as governors Seyi Makinde and Bala Mohammed distanced themselves from Minister Nyesom Wike’s bloc, hinting at a possible alliance with opposition groups ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Governor Makinde, stated that collaborating with Wike amounts to siding with President Bola Tinubu, sparking speculation about the party’s internal dynamics.
The governors’ faction, led by Makinde and Mohammed, has been meeting with opposition leaders, including Senator Seriake Dickson and former Kano State Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso, amidst stalled reconciliation talks with Wike’s camp.
The meetings, officially described as part of Eid-el-Fitr celebrations, are believed to be linked to preparations for the 2027 presidential election.
The PDP has been embroiled in internal turmoil, with two rival factions – one led by Wike and the other by the governors – vying for control.
A Court of Appeal ruling earlier this year nullified the governors’ faction convention, declaring the election of officials, including Tanimu Turaki, as invalid.
Despite this, both factions claim legitimacy and have set the stage for a possible showdown at the party’s national convention on March 29-30.
