A tragic incident has sparked widespread outrage in Ibadan, Oyo State capital, as a secondary school boy named Taiwo, was killed by a stray bullet fired by a police officer.
The lifeless body of the boy brought to the Oyo State Secretariat, Agodi, Ibadan, earlier Tuesday, sparking a protest led by the boy’s father.
According to eyewitnesses, the incident occurred in the Alakia area, Egbeda Local Government Area.
A police officer attached to the Oyo State Road Traffic Management Authority (OYRTMA) allegedly fired a shot at the tire of a traffic offender, believed to be a yahoo boy.
However, the bullet strayed and hit the boy, who was seated in the backseat of a car with his brother, while their father was driving them to school.
The boy was rushed to Welfare Hospital, Old Ife Road, Ibadan, where he was referred to the University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan.
Unfortunately, he was confirmed dead at UCH.
The protesters, led by the boy’s father, stormed the state Secretariat, demanding instant justice for the deceased.
Addressing the protesters, Executive Assistant to Governor Seyi Makinde on Security, CP Sunday Odukoya(retired) assured the protesters that the state government would ensure justice is delivered in the incident.
The government has yet to release further details on the investigation and potential consequences for the police officer involved. The incident has sparked widespread outrage and calls for accountability.
