A bill to amend the 1999 Constitution and give room to create new Oyo State and Ibadan State has passed the second reading in the House of Representatives.
The bill, sponsored by Akeem Adeyemi, the son of the late Alaafin Adeyemi, and six other members, intends to create Ibadan State out of current Oyo State.
Details of the bill showed that Oyo State will have Oyo town as the capital, while Ibadan State will make Ibadan city as it’s capital.
The constitution alteration bill was passed for a second reading on Tuesday during the plenary session.
The bill proposes the division of the existing 33 local governments, which would be shared among the two states.
The bill was referred to the Constitutional Review Committee for further legislative action.
This move is a continuation of actions by the lawmakers where new states are being intended for creation to join the country’s current thirty-six states.
Recall that Engineer Seyi Makinde, is the current governor of Oyo state, which was formed out of old Western region of Nigeria
