Former Governor of Abia State, Orji Uzor Kalu, has revealed that he earns 14 million monthly as a senator, but the money is not enough to to cover his expenses.
Kalu, who represents Abia North Senatorial District, stated this on Thursday during an interview on Channels TV’s Politics Today, where he also advocated for a six-year single term for politicians to reduce the focus on re-election and allow them to serve the people better.
“I earn N14 million in a month encompassing my salary, overhead and workers’ salaries. Let me be honest with you, do you know from this money I have to buy fuel to travel to my constituency? It’s not enough.
Kalu who reasurred that he would never fail his people, argued that most senators were doing well for their constituents.
“I am doing my best as a legislator for my constituency. I will never fail in my duty and I am sure most senators are doing their duties in their constituencies. I can never fail in Abia North Senatorial District” .
Meanwhile, Kalu’s statement has sparked controversy, with many criticizing him for being insensitive and out of touch with the struggles of ordinary Nigerians.
Some have even suggested that he resign from his position if he feels underpaid.
However, others have defended him, arguing that the cost of living in Nigeria has increased significantly, and ₦14 million may not be as substantial as it seems.
Interestingly, one commenter claimed to have access to the salary accounts of senators, stating that their take-home pay is actually around ₦26 million per month, which contradicts Kalu’s claim.
