The Super Eagles of Nigeria have beaten the Mediterranean Knights of Libya by one goal to nil in the AFCON qualifiers match held at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium, Uyo, Akwa Ibom State.
Nigerian midfielder, Fisayo Dele-Bashiru, was the hero that gave Nigeria a late victory over their stubborn visitors, as he scored from a clinical counterattack in the 86th minute of the encounter.
In the dramatic game, Super Eagles had struggled to break Libyan defence that absorbed waves of Nigerian pressure.
Nigeria players, include, Alex Iwobi, William Troost-Ekong, Victor Boniface and Samuel Chukwueze missed chances that could have put Nigeria ahead.
The midfielder, Dele-Bashiru, who was brought on as a substitute by the interim coach, Austin Eguavoen, made an instant impact, and stole the spotlight, by delivering a late-game winner that gave Nigeria a hard-fought victory.
Furthermore, Atalanta star, Ademola Lookman thought he had doubled Nigeria’s lead in the 83rd minute, but his goal was ruled out for offside.
Meanwhile, the win boosts Nigeria’s qualification hopes, having earlier played Benin Republic and Rwanda with a two nil win and a goalless draw respectively.
The Super Eagles will on 15th of October, 2024 play return leg of the encounter in Benina, against the Mediterranean Knights of Libya.
Nigeria is leading the AFCON 2025 qualifiers Group D table with seven points, followed by Benin Republic with six points, Rwanda with two points seated in third and Libya fourth with just a point.
