Operations at Karma Agric Feeds & Foods Limited, along Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, were halted today after staff downed tools in protest following the discovery of a colleague’s body in a water-filled pit on the company premises.
The deceased was identified as Wasiu Yusuf.
According to staff accounts, Mr. Yusuf fell into the pit three days ago, while his body was recovered this morning(Saturday).
They added that Police officers arrived at the scene shortly after the discovery to inspect the area and evacuated the body.
As of press time, no members of Mr. Yusuf’s family had been seen at the company.
Workers said this is the second fatal incident of its kind at Karma Food, and accused management of failing to address safety hazards and staff welfare.
“This is the second time we are losing someone like this in the company, and the company is not showing any care,” one staff member told reporters. “We cannot continue working like this”
In response to what they described as management’s “nonchalant attitude to staff wellbeing,” employees refused to resume work today.
The protest is ongoing as workers demand urgent safety improvements and accountability from company leadership.
Neither Police have yet released an official statement on the cause of death or on investigations into the condition of the pit nor Karma Food management had issued a public comment at the time of filing this report.
The company has been contacted for comment.
Meanwhile, Workers of the company had in past issued direct appeal to Federal Government, Oyo State Government, Ministry of Labour and Employment, and other stakeholders to intervene in what they describe as systemic neglect of basic employee welfare and rights at the company.
